Film Preface:

After losing his home to a tornado, a sound designer searches for a "disaster resilient" home to continue his sound design work in. Fate however, has a different plan...

Things get interesting when a synthesist/sound-  designer discovers his new synth is capable of tuning-in extraterrestrial communications like a cosmic radio receiver.

The discovery sets him on a desperate quest to save Earth from an impending  invasion.                                                                                                   ( -ABOVE  )  "THE  SYNTHESIST"

After recovering from  his injuries, he spends a week relaxing at a Florida Air BnB home, returning rested and ready to resume his home search and sound design work.

Saving the World with a Synthesizer...

"The Synthesist" merges intelligent sci-fi with thrilling  suspense as a syn-  thesist is forced

to use his "synth smarts" and res-ourcefulness to defeat a powerful government - ET conspiracy.

( -ABOVE  )  "SYNTHESIST" -The Movie.

Finding a "Smarter Way" to build...

Story line continued from above...

During his stay      at the Florida AirBnB, the synth-esist spends time lounging poolside with his laptop

( -searching for    disaster resilient home building solutions ).                                                                    ( -ABOVE  )  LUXURY  RESORT HOME

"CLOAK and DAGGER" SUSPENSE. All set to a scintillating synth-heavy soundtrack. "The Synthesist" has it all. Buckle-up for a thrill ride!

"The Synthesist. Movie of "firsts"

"The Synthesist" is the first movie

to expose audiences to the world

of a freelance synthesist/ sound designer.

It's ALSO the first film to show

audiences today's "SMARTEST", "disaster resilient" home. Beyond sci-fi, "The Synthesist" will open your eyes to innovative architecture!                                                                                                                                                 ( -ABOVE  )  THE  SYNTHESIST

A curious patch...

-Story line ( -continued from above ).

After returning from his restful Sarasota, Florida vacation, the synthesist's ( new ) disaster resilient home is built. He gets back to work returning to his job ( -of programming sound effects for his demanding studio boss ) who needs

his electronic-music and sound-effects for an

important TV commercial ).                                                                          ( -ABOVE  )  THE SYNTHESIST AT WORK.

Late one night, while programming SFX, the synthesist encounters lots of noise and crosstalk. Thinking it's the result of "bleed through" from communications channels in the area - he continues tweaking, hoping the crosstalk will subside. To his dismay, it only worsens. That is,

until he adjusts one last knob!               ( -ABOVE )  "BREAK  THROUGH"

Suddenly, the synthesist is knocked unconscious and  enters a deep hypnotic dream state ( -during which he exper- iences a bewildering flood of telepathic images, cryptic symbols and strange vocalizations ).                                                                                                                                                                                                                            ( -ABOVE )   DREAM  STATE

A Paradigm Shift in Housing...

A higher purpose...

*NOTE:  A key motivation behind  this movie is my commitment to the "Build Smart" movement that promotes the increased use of high-tech building materials and "disaster-resilient" home design in order to save lives.                                                                                                                                                        "BUILDING  SMARTER"  SAVES  LIVES!

By showcasing these "Build Smarter" practices in films like this, I hope    to motivate home buyers and builders to adopt these life-saving, energy efficient, affordable housing solutions whenever possible. Hopefully, our movie will effect a "sea change" in the home construction industry  ( -so we'll no longer have to witness heartbreaking scenes like the one    above on TV newscasts every spring tornado season! ).

the mission

Story line continued from above...

Waking with a terrific headache, the synthesist vows to investigative the curious patch further.

( -ABOVE  )  ALIEN COMMUNICATIONS

Despite it's modest production budget, "The Synthesist" employs a plethora of innovative visual special-effects.

This "interstellar Tunnel" effect is used when the Synthesist traverses "space and time" via    the crystal's matrix.

"The Synthesist updates the "common man" hero,  giving film audiences a rare glimpse into the world of a freelance synthesist / sound designer"                                                                                                                -Tomm Buzzetta -Producer "The Synthesist"

Piecing together the puzzle.

Story line continued from above...

Over the following weeks, the synthesist continues monitoring the telepathic transmissions on his synthesizer. Slowly, he begins to

piece together the cryptic symbols, "thought-pictures" and sounds.

The conclusion he comes to has both startling and far-reaching implications:                                                                        ( -Continued below )

Synthesist's "tools of the trade". A bedroom project-studio like the one used in "The Synthesist". Pictured are Roland's SE-02, Korg's "Volca Bass" and an      Akai Sampler.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         ( -ABOVE )  SYNTHESIST  PROJECT  STUDIO

-Story line continued from above...

The transmissions are of extraterrestrial origin and an alien invasion is imminent! Worse yet, it appears high-placed government officials are aiding and abetting the aliens in their takeover bid. ( -continued below )

                                                                                                 The "Desert Planet"

The Crystal Matrix

The Synthesist's plan to defeat the conspiracy requires using a crystal he's found at a UFO-landing site. By touching the crystal's facets he can travel to various alien "portal-nodes" ( -such as "the Desert Planet" ). He uses the crystal to leave something behind. We won't divulge "what" but it will make sense to physicists and synthesists. ( -continued below )

Summoning all of his courage, "synth smarts"

and out-of-the box thinking, the resourceful synthesist devises a plan to foil the invasion ( -all while bringing in his latest sound design job on-time and "on-budget"  to the surprise of his difficult employer and demanding

TV commercial client! ).

Continuing the "Common Man Hero" ethic...

Modern film has a fine tradition      of taking the "ordinary man"

-doing his everyday job -and  thrusting him into extraordinary circumstances that force him to  "go beyond" what he thought he was capable of. "The Synthesist" continues this film tradition by giving viewers a unique glimpse into the world of a freelance synthesist / sound-designer.

( -ABOVE )  JOHN TRAVOLTA - BRIAN DE PALMA'S

RELUCTANT HERO IN ( 1980's ) "BLOW-OUT"

In "Blow-Out" sound-effects man Jack Terry inadvertently captures a political assassination on audio tape, then has to decide what to do

with the incriminating evidence ( -before a hIred assassin kills HIM! ).

Continuing a tradition by tweaking a knob...

In Antionelli's ( 1968 ) thriller "Blow-up", a fashion photog's casual park photos accident-ally capture a murder on film. The photographer -played by British actor David Hemmings, eventually comes to the stark realization his impromptu pix may hold the key to solving a          ( -ABOVE )  ANTIONELLI's "BLOW-UP"

murder. Once again, "common man" unwillingly thrust into extraordinary circumstances he must "make right". The same predicament shared by our Synthesist. And the tradition continues. Only with sawtooth and sine waves pulsing in the movie's background sound score...

Behringer "Model 15"

Selected as movie's primary story line "prop".

After carefully considering the synth nominations below ( -and thanks  to all who sent them! ), I've decided to go with Behringer's "Model 15" Synthesizer ( -as the movie's main story line prop ). Other synths seen  in the movie will be Roland's JX-08, JD-08 as well as Behringer's poly- phonic Pro-800 and new ( "tiny beast" ) the Behringer UB-1 Micro. All of these synths will be contributing to the movie's electronic-music score.

Lovers of power-drenched ( -analog ) EM wont be disappointed!

( LEFT )  BEHRINGER'S "MODEL 15" SYNTH.

With it's warm "Moog like" sound and old-school control panel  ( -with knurled knobs ), the "Model 15" absolutely nailed the "vintage" look we were after for the movie's primary on-screen "eye-candy". It's built in sequencer and arpeggiator will be heard throughout the film - pushing the movie's driving EM score ever forward. It's amazing such an afford- able synth can sound and look this good. Kudos Behringer!

Some of the synths that have already been nominated for possible use in "The Synthesist" ( sci-fi movie ):

*NOTE:  This is a "sampling" of the synth nominations we've received. We'll try to include more as they come in. THANKS FOR VOTING!

We're looking for a truly unique and innovative synth to feature in our movie. It will serve as both story prop and "eye-candy" ( -as well as provide much of the film's SFX and music ). A tall order!

Behringer's ( new ) VCS3 clone seems a good choice. It certainly has the fetching onscreen looks we're looking for. Tell us what YOU think! Should the VCS3 get the part or do you think another synth deserves this                                                                                                  "starring role"?                                          ( -ABOVE )  BEHRINGER'S VCS3

"You should absolutely use the VCS3 as the synth prop. It's got that crazy scientist vibe and the controls are perfect for articulating all sorts of things"                                                                                         -Henrik Gilvad.

"You should go with the ARP 2600. Korg makes one and Behringer makes a very nice one. Has the looks and sound".  -Michael Moore

"Of the synths listed, I would choose the Moog Subsequent 37. However,  I would suggest you add the Arturia Matrixbrute to the list".                                                                                                            -Chris Johnston

"Novation Mininova".   -Nash

"Out of the selections so far. I would nominate the Moog ( Subsequent

37 ). However, if you're looking for an interesting piece of kit to show,

I would personally recommend the Access Virus. There are several iterations to pick from the lineage, all of which are capable and versatile devices. Aggressive styling and appearance coupled with a strong sound engine makes for an intriguing instrument".    -Nick Toledo

"Keep those synthesizer nominations coming in!      I enjoy the thought-provoking comments            and "feedback".                                                                                                                                                                    -Tomm Buzzetta -Producer "The Synthesist".

"I would like to have the Mininova starred not only because of it's looks    ( -and because I own one ) but also because it could add to the plot -there's an Editor Software which can "glitch" or bring up the "hidden patch"                                   -Martin Ribitsch

"Hi, I would vote for KORG MS2000 or KingKorg"   -Alisa Coral

"Waldorf QUANTUM without question + has greatest different coloured LEDs on a synth of which you can change. It has incredibly different sounds never before available in 1 synthesizer keyboard".     -John

"Sorry, the Hydrasynth Deluxe is not on your list, but it should be. It's  the only Hydrasynth with 16 voice polyphony, 73 keys and several    other extras".                        -Michael Loutris

"None of these, the Roland System 8 is the one you want. Not only    does Jean Michael Jarre use it front and center, it also has lots of knobs, sliders and lovely green lights which wouldn't look out of place in the matrix, or even in a borg mothercube"           -Glyne Wilde

"Life doesn't get any better    than a plate full of "warm from the oven" Tollhouse chocolate-chip cookies, a glass of milk and your synthesizer's oscillators warming up for a late night recording session".

-Old Synthesist's proverb.
